Deadliest Tornado Season in 50 years

The summer 2011 issue of Disaster Recovery Journal featured an article written by Mike Smith where he comments on 2011 being the deadliest tornado season in 50 years, with the worst outbreak occurring in Alabama and northeast Mississippi on April 27. When loss of life occurs, questions are raised about what went wrong and what needs to happen to learn from the disaster and move forward.

The 3 lessons learned that Mike points out are:
 Preserving communications is essential.
Underground or reinforced shelter is necessary to save lives and assets.
 Too many alarms breed complancency.

With loss of power comes a loss of the warning system. Having a satellite phone with an external antenna will provide you with the information you need to stay out of harms way.

Safe rooms or underground or reinforced shelter is essential for survival. No conventional home is able to withstand an upper-intensity tornado. Have a planned area clearly marked for taking cover.

Too many alarms breed complancency. Don't delay when you hear the warnings; take cover and the life you save may be your own.
